WHAT IS THE LOOFAH?
The loofah is a gourd-like tropical fruit that requires little maintenance and no artificial fertilizers to grow quickly. When the fruit is harvested and sun-dried, what you get is a fibrous material with a spongy texture that is perfect for cleaning.
A natural gift from Mother Earth, the loofah sponge has been used for generations in Vietnam and many other places as a daily scrubber. Why do we need to use pollutive plastic sponges when we already have something so wonderful and natural like the loofah? Not to mention that both options cost around the same price! So it’s really not a tough choice to make. Do ourselves and our future generations a big favor by switching to loofah sponges today.
Fun fact: At Green Steps, we have successfully grown the loofah from seed to fruiting plant in a pot by our balcony! ?
USING THE LOOFAH SPONGE
When you first receive your loofah sponge, it is going to feel stiff. But this is the natural property of loofah and nothing to worry about 🙂 Simply soak the loofah sponge in water to soften it.
Use the loofah sponge for dish washing and other household cleaning. When wet, the loofah sponge offers a perfect balance between firmness and softness, making it suitable for scrubbing off dirt from your dishes, while being gentle enough not to leave any scratch marks on your wares.
Not to mention that the loofah sponge features a great grip and feel when you hold it, which makes household cleaning a much more enjoyable process!
Once per month, soak the loofah sponge in hot water, or hang out to dry in the sun, or microwave for 20 seconds while damp, to kill all the bad bacteria. Wash the sponge clean and hang dry after use.
The loofah sponge can last for months and even years. But for hygiene reasons, we recommend to change your loofah sponge every 2 to 4 months. Discard your loofah if there are signs of mold or a lingering musty odor. And as the loofah sponge is 100% natural, you can choose to compost it.
